Baseball Battles No. 6/14 Rowan to Extra Innings; Falls 5-4

Auburndale, Fla. - March 22, 2019 - The Springfield College baseball team took nationally-ranked Rowan University to extra innings, but fell to the Profs, 5-4, in 11 innings to close out its annual Spring break trip to Florida, playing at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex on Friday afternoon.

With the loss, the Pride is now 3-6, while Rowan, which was ranked No. 6 in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and No. 14 in the d3baseball.com national rankings, improves to 7-3 overall.

Springfield College used a combination of three pitchers, as Duncan Satterlee (Albany, N.Y.) pitched 4.2 strong innings, giving up just eight hits and striking out four, while John Daley (Huntington, Mass.) went for 4.1 frames of one-hit ball, also fanning four. Jacob Shpur (East Canaan, Conn.) took the loss as he went for 1.2 innings, giving up three hits and the decisive earned run in the bottom of the 11th.

Sophomore Jack Simonetty (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) led the Pride at the plate, going 3-for-5, while Brandon Russo (Lisbon, Conn.) was 1-for-4 with a run scored.

After falling behind 4-0 through the first four innings, Springfield College battled back with four runs in the top of the fifth behind an RBI fielder's choice from Conor Santoianni (Stormville, N.Y.) which scored Matt Fraioli (Stamford, Conn.) and Simonetty, before Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.) reached on an error which plated Simonetty later in the frame. Russo would then score on a passed ball to even the score at four apiece.

The two sides then battled back-and-forth until Rowan walked off with a run in the bottom of the 11th.

Springfield College will now look to its next opponent, Emerson, as the Pride will open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play with a doubleheader at the Lions on Sunday, March 24 beginning at 12 p.m.
