Baseball Closes Out Spring Break With 8-5 Triumph Over New Paltz

Auburndale, Fla. - March 18, 2018 - The Springfield College baseball team finished off its annual Spring Break trip in Florida with an 8-5 triumph over New Paltz, scoring five of its eight runs in the final two innings. With the win, Springfield College improves to 8-3-1 on the year, while it posted a record of 7-2 in the sunshine state. With the loss, New Paltz is now 4-4.

Freshman Noah Bleakley (Granby, Mass.) picked up his first-career victory on the mound as he tossed 5.2 innings, giving up just four hits while striking out four Hawks' batters. Jack Weinberger (Sunapee, N.H.) made his third appearance of the season in relief, pitching 1.1 frames of hitless ball while fanning two. Fletcher Comment (Westbrook, Conn.) and Jordan Elkary (North Easton, Mass.) came on for the final two innings to shut down New Paltz and seal the victory.

At the plate, sophomore outfielder Chad Shade (Pittsfield, Mass.) had himself a day, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Mark Joao (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Brandon Drabinski (Lisbon, Conn.) and Brandon Russo (Lisbon, Conn.) also added a pair of hits in the win. 

After New Paltz scored in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead over the Pride, Springfield College responded in the bottom of the third when Nick Leduc (Belchertown, Mass.) roped a double to score Shade, before Shade blasted his second home run in as many games in the fifth, a two-run shot that gave the Pride a 3-1 lead.

Springfield College constructed a two-run bottom of the seventh on RBI from Shade and Joao, before putting together three runs in the bottom of of the eighth, benefitting from RBI off the bats of Marcelino Diaz (Hartford, Conn.), Russo and Leduc.

New Paltz would rally for four runs in the top of the ninth, but Elkary was able to get the final outs, sealing the win. 

Springfield College will return to the diamond on Thursday, March 22 when the Pride takes on Fitchburg State in a non-conference battle to begin at 3:30 p.m. on Archie Allen Field.
