Springfield College Hosts Screening of Award-Winning Documentary

From left, Springfield College Communications/Sports Journalism Professor Martin Dobrow, and Mimi Jones, a lifelong civil rights advocate, who was involved in the most dramatic moment in the St. Augustine story, and filmaker Clennon King.

The Springfield College Division of Inclusion and Community Engagement presented a screening of the award-winning documentary, Passage at St. Augustine: A Bloody Battle for Civil Rights in America?s Oldest City, on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016, in the Cleveland E. and Phyllis B. Dodge Room in the Flynn Campus Union.

The film provided a detailed account of the racial tension that was taking place in St. Augustine, Fla., in 1963-64. Following the film, there was a panel discussion and question and answer segment with the audience that included filmmaker Clennon King, Springfield College Communications/Sports Journalism Professor Martin Dobrow, and Mimi Jones, a lifelong civil rights advocate, who was involved in the most dramatic moment in the St. Augustine story.

The film also took the viewers back to the days leading up to one of the most significant events in the history of Springfield College. On June 11, 1964, Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested for trying to order food at a whites-only restaurant in St. Augustine, and spent time in jail in Florida from June 11 through 13. On June 14, King was scheduled to deliver the commencement address at Springfield College, and thanks in large part to Springfield College President at the time Glenn A. Olds, King was able to deliver his speech on the campus.

Mike Cerasuolo '93 Named Springfield College Football Head Coach

Springfield, Mass. - January 27, 2016 - Springfield College Director of Athletics, Dr. Craig Poisson, is pleased to announce that Mike Cerasuolo '93 has been named the next head football coach at Springfield College.

Cerasuolo becomes the 14th football coach in the history of the Springfield College football program that dates back to 1890, and is just the fifth coach the program has had in the past 70 years.

"I am so thankful and humbled at the opportunity to be the next head football coach at Springfield College. I want to thank President Cooper, Dr. Poisson, and the search committee for their due diligence during this process," said Cerasuolo. "I've had many mentors help me to this point in my career, including Mike DeLong and Jack Holik, who have provided the foundation and standard for which we will continue to build our program. To mentor our dedicated student-athletes who work so hard is why I pursued this position, and I look forward to carrying on the tradition and legacy of Springfield College football that will make our alumni network proud."

Cerasuolo just concluded his 15th season as offensive coordinator for the Springfield College football program. With Cerasuolo devising the game plans, the Pride has established itself as one of the premier offenses in Division III football. Under his direction, the Pride has won five national rushing titles, including most recently in 2011, while the offensive unit has eclipsed the 40-point mark 35 times, the 50-point plateau 16 times and the 60 point mark on 10 occasions. During his tenure, Springfield has had nine student-athletes who play on the offensive side of the ball earn All-America honors, highlighted by Chris Sharpe '07 winning the 2006 Melberger Award, which is awarded to the top Division III football student-athlete in the country.

"Coach Cerasuolo is dedicated to the spirit, mind, and body of our student-athletes. While he deeply cares about their performance on the field, he has developed compassionate individuals who are involved in the community, as evidenced by his leadership with Team Impact and the LukeStronger movement. What a wonderful opportunity for him to lead a program that he once played for, and under his watch, carry on the special tradition of Springfield College football," explained Dr. Mary-Beth Cooper, Springfield College president.

A sought-after clinician, Cerasuolo has also done great work off the field for the Pride. Under his leadership, the Pride has become heavily involved with Team IMPACT and has had three members of the football program be marrow donors through the Be The Match program.

"The way that Coach Cerasuolo has carried himself on the sidelines, in the classroom, and in the community is symbiotic with Springfield College, its mission of developing leaders, and its athletic program," said Dr. Poisson. "As we look to the future with Coach Cerasuolo as the a new head coach and the upcoming transition into the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), this is a very exciting time for Springfield College football."

A 1993 Springfield graduate and a native of Northboro, Mass., Cerasuolo was the offensive coordinator at Division II Mansfield during the 2000 season, where he was also in charge of the offensive line, quarterbacks, tight ends, short snappers, holders, and kick returners. Prior to Mansfield, Cerasuolo held offensive coordinator positions at Alfred, Lebanon Valley, and SUNY Cortland, and was the offensive line and tight ends coach at the University of Maine, and defensive line coach at Ithaca.

A standout center, Cerasuolo was named Springfield College's most valuable offensive player during his senior year, was a two-time Division II All-New England selection, and a 1992 Associated Press and New England College Football Writers' Association All-Star. After earning his bachelor's degree in physical education from Springfield College, Cerasuolo went on to receive his master's degree in sport pedagogy from Ithaca in 1995.

Mike and his wife, Tracy, reside in Hampden with their two daughters.

Springfield College and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Present Hoophall Classic Leadership Award

Springfield College and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame presented the fourth annual Hoophall Classic Leadership Award to Springfield College sport management students Brooke Fairman and Gregory Weigert. Springfield College President Mary-Beth Cooper and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame President and Chief Executive Officer John Doleva made the formal presentation during the 2016 Spalding Hoophall Classic at Blake Arena.

Both Fairman and Weigert were key contributors during the 2016 Spalding Hoophall Classic, the leading high school basketball tournament in the country showcasing the nation?s top recruits. As part of their responsibilities, Fairman and Weigert helped lead more than 75 student event staff workers and more than 30 student liaisons during the event. They created and conducted training sessions for volunteers of the event; collaborated with Springfield College Office of Conferences & Special Events, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and ESPN to ensure schedules of events; and supervised all event operations during the five-day tournament.

Fairman is a native of Huntington, Mass., and is the current president of the Springfield College Sport Management Club. Fairman served as one of the main student leaders for the Springfield College Department of Sport Management and Recreation at this year?s Hoophall Classic, the third consecutive year she assisted at the event. She has earned dean?s list status on a regular basis during her academic career at Springfield College, which includes a double minor in business management and coaching. She graduated from nearby Gateway Regional High School before enrolling at Springfield College, and currently works as a camp counselor for the Huntington Recreation Committee during the summer.

Weigert is a native of Windsor Locks, Conn., and has participated in the Hoophall Classic for three consecutive years working as a supervisor, team liaison, and member of the event management and operations staff. Currently a dean?s list student, he has served as a Springfield College student ambassador for both the Team IMPACT organization and St. Baldrick?s Foundation. Weigert remains active in his hometown volunteering as an assistant varsity baseball coach for Windsor Locks High School and as a youth basketball supervisor for the Windsor Locks Parks and Recreation Department.

The Hoophall Classic Leadership Award is presented annually to both a male and female junior majoring in sport management who has maintained a successful grade point average and demonstrated a combination of service to Springfield College and the Hoophall Classic. The recipients are each awarded a $2,500 scholarship to be used during their senior year at Springfield College.

Springfield College Students Gain Valuable Experience Working at Spalding Hoophall Classic

For the 12th consecutive year, members of the Springfield College Events Management 116 class assisted with all facets of operations at the 2016 Spalding Hoophall Classic from Jan. 14 through Jan.18 at Springfield College?s Blake Arena. More than 70 students gained valuable sport management experience in a real-life setting.

?This event has become a valuable learning tool because it offers a great opportunity for Springfield College students to experience a first-class event and get direct hands-on experience,? said Springfield College Chair for the Department of Sport Management and Recreation Kevin McAllister. ?It takes what the students have learned in the classroom and brings it all together in a live setting.?

The Spalding Hoophall Classic continues to be one of the premier high school basketball events nationwide. The College welcomes 50 teams and more than 8,000 visitors to campus throughout the weekend. The College enters the national stage again this year as many of the games will be televised on ESPN and ESPNU. Springfield College students will be working in a variety of roles during the event including serving as security, media relations assistants, event operations assistants, and liaisons to the participating teams.

?When the students see those ESPN trucks setup, and you start to feel the buzz of all of the big-name college coaches in attendance, they quickly realize this event is a big-time event,? said McAllister. ?This is a great opportunity for the students and a great opportunity for the College.?

The Hoophall Classic celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2016, and this year also represented the 125th anniversary of the birth of basketball, which was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 at Springfield College.

Springfield College Assists in Hosting Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration

Springfield College collaborated with MLK Family Services, the Community Music School of Springfield, and D.R.E.A.M. Studios in hosting the 2016 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration on Monday, Jan. 18, at the MassMutual Center in downtown Springfield. Springfield College Vice President for Inclusion and Community Engagement Calvin Hill and students from the Springfield College Department of Dance participated in the day?s events.

?Springfield College is proud to support this year?s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Day,? said Hill, who appeared on WGBY?s Connecting Point talking about the event. ?Through embracing the theme of reclaiming the dream of the beloved community, we strive to march towards the goal of creating an inclusive community where every member is valued and welcomed. On this day, we will not only gather to celebrate our past, but through our youth, we come together to celebrate our future.?

This year?s Dr. King Day celebration included music, dance, and spoken word, from a variety of Springfield community groups and schools providing inspiration and reflection of the legacy of Dr. King.

One of the shining moments in Springfield College's history was when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered the commencement address at the College in June 1964. In 2014, Springfield College established the Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture, which occurs annually on campus each year, and honors the history of inclusion and diversity at Springfield College.

The Springfield College School of Social Work, offering multiple pathways to the master of social work degree (MSW) and accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), hosted an open house for prospective graduate students on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at both the Brennan Center located at 45 Island Pond Road in Springfield, and at Saint Vincent Hospital, 123 Summer Street in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Prospective graduate students met the dean, faculty members, staff and current students, to learn about program options. Information on graduate fellowships and assistantships were available. Representatives from the academic success center, admissions, and career service also were in attendance.

The Springfield College School of Social Work offers multiple program pathways to complete the MSW including a full-time, two-year, weekday master of social work program in Springfield, and a part-time, three-year, weekend master of social work program in Springfield and in Worcester at Saint Vincent Hospital. There are also options for graduates of Council on Social Work Education-accredited bachelor of social work programs to choose either a four-semester weekend or three-semester weekday advanced standing program. The dual master of social work/juris doctorate is a four-year, full-time program in conjunction with Western New England University School of Law. Students can also work toward a post-master?s certificate in advanced practice with children and adolescents.

The Springfield College School of Social Work?s cutting-edge advanced generalist curriculum provides skill-building in clinical practice, supervision and administration, evidence-informed research, social policy, and advocacy for social justice - and has for 26 years. An outstanding diverse faculty, comprised of active practitioners, scholars, and researchers, is in touch with the community and contributes to shaping current thinking and practice in social work.

With a diverse and international student body, the Springfield College School of Social Works takes pride in providing a low faculty-to-student ratio and on maintaining a strong alumni network of accomplished practitioners. Internships are available at a wide range of social work agencies across New England and New York State, and internships at students? places of employment may be possible.

?Your decision to pursue a master of social work degree (MSW) is timely as Health Guide USA predicts that employment of social workers is expected to increase by 25 percent from 2010 to 2020,? said Springfield College School of Social Work Dean Francine J. Vecchiolla. ?Our master of social work program offers a single concentration in advanced generalist practice, which is ideal preparation for direct practice, group work, community development and organization, and administration in a wide variety of settings including adoption agencies, schools, hospitals, veterans? services, senior centers, prisons, mental health clinics, military support programs, public social agencies, hospice care and corporations. The school is student centered, community focused, and committed to diversity and cultural competence and to promoting continuous learning.?

Since 1989, the Springfield College School of Social Work has been accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, the official accrediting body for social work programs in the United States. The home of the Springfield College School of Social Work, the Brennan Center, is a state-of-the-art teaching and conference facility that underwent a $2.2 million renovation in 2002. Springfield College Communication Sciences and Disorders Majors Receive WillPower Foundation University/College Humanitarian Award

Springfield College communication sciences and disorders students, who are members of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, recently received the WillPower Foundation?s university/college humanitarian award. The WillPower Foundation provides financial support that empowers western Massachusetts families and individuals with different abilities to meet their unique needs.

?We are extremely honored to have received this award in our first year as an official National Student Speech Language Hearing Association chapter,? said Springfield College student and National Student Speech Language Hearing Association treasurer Abbie King. ?The Springfield College communication sciences and disorders program was given the award in recognition of the program?s commitment to assisting the WillPower Foundation with fundraising and advocacy work. The College hosted multiple fundraising events over the last year for WillPower, and we plan to have another large fund-raising event for the foundation in the spring.?

The WillPower Foundation provides grants for items such as mobility equipment, therapeutic recreation, advocacy costs, attorney?s fees, private tutoring, and personal care needs.

?I witnessed first-hand how important the WillPower Foundation is in the community,? said King. ?At my internship with Communicare, I noticed that many of the clients we worked with had been awarded grants to purchase communication apps on their iPads, which gave these children a voice that they otherwise would not have had.?

The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association has approximately 13,000 members at more than 300 independently operated chapters located on college and university campuses in the United States and abroad.

Springfield College Purchases Holy Family Rectory to Create Community Engagement Center

Springfield College has purchased the Holy Family Rectory located at 235 Eastern Avenue, adjacent to the campus. The College will next lead efforts in renovating the property, which will serve as a community engagement center focused on educating students, while engaging with community members to address community needs.

A team of Springfield College staff and students, coordinated by Springfield College Director of Student Volunteer Programs Charlene Elvers, is developing a plan for the new center. The group is currently in the brainstorming stage. Some early ideas include an exchange center for clothing, books, and other items, and possible space for tutoring and workshops.

?Ideally, this center will match the needs of our communities-the community of neighbors surrounding the campus and the college students, faculty, and staff at Springfield College-and lessen the feeling of separateness,? said Elvers. ?This center has the potential to link the issues that students care about with the things they believe they can change, providing a platform to develop students as leaders in service to humanity.?

Springfield College students will actively be involved in the refurbishing of the space, providing them a unique, hands-on experience in helping renovate a landmark building to serve as a community resource. The College values its partnerships with its surrounding neighborhoods, and once again will collaborate with its campus partners when recreating this space.

?We were motivated to acquire this space to design and create a civic engagement center that serves the community and that provides valuable real-life experience training to our students so that they may become engaged civic leaders after they graduate," said Springfield College President Mary-Beth A. Cooper.

Cooper helped lead the work on the outside of the center during the College?s annual community service day, called Humanics in Action Day. Cooper was joined by several students, staff, and faculty, on that day, as they worked together to clear brush surrounding the facility.

Upon renovation, the center will be just a quarter of a mile from the Springfield College Campus Union, the hub of the campus; will consist of two major floors; and a full-scale kitchen, basement, and attic space.
