Sports Communications Staff Selected For AVCA Regional Media Honor

Springfield, Mass. - July 12, 2018 - The Springfield College Sports Communications Office was recently recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for its successful efforts in the advancement and promotion of the sport of volleyball. The College earned a NCAA Division III Sports Information Director Regional Honor during the announcement of the annual AVCA Grant Burger Media Award. 

Led by the efforts of Assistant Athletic Director for Communications, Brian Magoffin, and Coordinator of Media Relations, Jon Santer, Springfield College was one of 10 Division III institutions from across the country to earn the regional accolade.  In fact, this marks the seventh time in the last 11 years that Springfield College has been recognized by the AVCA for its promotion of the sport of volleyball.  Traditional releases and statistical coverage, web and video communications, including highlight packages, postgame interviews and features throughout the season, as well as a strategic social media content were utilized to highlight and promote the success of the women's and men's volleyball programs.

During the 2017-18 season, the Springfield College women's volleyball team produced a cumulative grade point average of 3.55 and had two student-athletes earn AVCA All-America honors, while another was the insitution's nomination for the NCAA Woman of the Year award.  The men's volleyball team repeated as the NCAA Division III National Champions to earn their 11th national title in program history as the Pride had the AVCA Division III National Coach of the Year and National Player of the Year while going undefeated against Division III competition.

The AVCA Grant Burger Media Award is an honor intended to recognize members of the media who have been involved in the advancement of the sport of volleyball through consistent coverage in all mediums. It is named in honor of Grant Burger, former Director of Sports Information and Associate Director of the AVCA (1988-92), whose hard work, innovative mind, knowledge and enthusiasm took the areas of media relations and publications at the AVCA to a higher level and increased awareness of the sport of volleyball nationwide.
